Appointment to the position is conditional upon the approval of the Chancellor.

Employees must satisfy all pre-employment requirements to work for the District which include, but are not limited to, the following items:

Tuberculosis Examination:  Prior to employment, the successful candidate will be required to submit evidence (either skin test or X-ray report) of being free of tuberculosis within the past sixty (60) days.  The TB test is a condition of employment and any expense must be borne by the successful candidate.

Fingerprinting Requirement:

As a condition of employment, all employees working for community colleges in the State of California are required to be fingerprinted within the first ten (10) working days of the date of employment pursuant to Education Code Section 88024. The District Office of Human Resources processes fingerprints electronically. During the employment intake process, new employees will be given information to have their fingerprints taken at another location.

Immigration Requirement:  According to the Immigration Reform and Control Act, the Peralta Community College District is required to verify that all new employees are:

1) A citizen or national of the United States;
2) An alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States; or
3) An alien authorized by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service to work in the United States.

All new employees are required to complete and sign a verification form and provide documentation attesting that he/she is a United States citizen, national, or an alien lawfully authorized to work in the United States.

District Policy:  A Social Security Card will be required following selection and prior to completion of the hiring process.  The employment process cannot be completed without a copy of the Social Security Card on file in the Office of Human Resources.

Agency Shop Requirement:  This position is covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement, which includes an agency shop provision.  This provision requires that, as a condition of employment, a new employee must either become a member of the union or pay a service fee to the union.

Medical Examination:  Under state regulations and as a condition of employment, certain positions may require a medical examination prior to employment.  Expenses incurred will be borne by the employee.

Job Description Summary

This vacancy is open only to current regular and hourly employees who are members of SEIU Local 1021. Per Article 8.7 of the Local 1021 contract, this job is being posted for ten (10) working days.

Work Schedule:
Monday – Thursday 11:00 a.m. – 7: 30 p.m. Friday 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Under general supervision, performs para-professional work to provide classroom instructors and other academic personnel in the performance of their work and in instructional tasks in the Culinary Arts Department.

Duties & Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty of the position satisfactorily. • Assists Culinary Arts Instructors in coordinating classes and developing instructional materials and preparing labs.
• assists instructors with menu planning.
• Assists and works with individuals and in small groups of students.
• Explains concepts, principles and terminology to students as needed.
• Prepares and maintains demonstrations and experiments.
• Assembles instructional materials according to prescribed guidelines.
• Instructs in procedures and use and upkeep of equipment.
• Inventories, orders, develops stock, and distributes instructional materials.
• Answers students’ questions and clarifies instructional materials and assignments.
• Maintains student attendance and performance records.
• Confers with instructor on student progress, class procedures, and instructional methods.
• Labels, and stores food items.
• Follows correct procedures to both demonstrate and use safe and sanitary food handling procedures.
• Maintains food service areas in accordance with applicable health and safety standards.
• Demonstrates proper techniques and helps students to master basic culinary skills including safe maintenance and use of tools, cleaning and maintenance of equipment, and safety and sanitation practices and procedures.
• May select and assign student assistants.
• Practices proper daily cleaning of work areas, tools, equipment, and materials.
• May use computer to prepare archive and retrieve recipes, input lesson plans, and use spread sheets to document attendance and performance reports.
• May assist with scoring test papers and special assignments
• May perform a variety of clerical duties.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Successful completion of two years of college in Culinary Arts; or an equivalent combination of training and qualifying experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge, skills and ability to perform the duties of the position.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to use appropriate safety and sanitation practices.
3. Demonstrated knowledge of proper English usage, both oral and written.
4. Ability to train students, develop and explain work assignments,
5. Knowledge of baking, proper use of baking equipment, and safe and sanitary food handling
6. Applicant must have demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college staff, faculty, and students.

Desirable Qualifications

• Certificate of Completion in Culinary Arts from a regionally accredited institution.
• Current ServSafe Certification.
• Two (2) years of industry experience in Culinary Arts.
• Ability to order, receive, and issue supplies, materials, and equipment.
• Ability to maintain records.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with faculty, students, and staff.
• Ability to participate in work projects as a team member.
• Ability to train student personnel.
• Strong customer service skills.
